A new emergency financial support program will aid residents evacuated due to the Lake George wildfire in Kings County, with applications opening on Wednesday, October 8th.
Eligibility for funding will be contingent upon providing proof of residency within the evacuation zone. The purpose of this program is to provide financial assistance to displaced residents, helping them cover unexpected costs. Notably, this funding builds upon the existing support services and emergency accommodations provided by the Canadian Red Cross and the Municipality of the County of Kings.
The Lake George wildfire is still not under control. Despite the hot, dry, windy weather, crews managed to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the current estimate of 288 hectares yesterday. They are striving to achieve the same outcome today in the face of these difficult conditions.
As of now, no structures have been compromised, and crews are persisting in their efforts to protect them. The resources deployed include 62 DNR, 39 BC, and 23 local firefighters, 2 Newfoundland and 4 NWT planes, 1 DNR and 5 contracted helicopters, and 30 pieces of heavy equipment.
Work continues on fire breaks and containment. Not all resources are utilized simultaneously. For instance, airspace may be reserved for helicopters conducting precision water drops that support tactical operations on the ground.
This morning, additional tankers have been requested, along with Waterville Big Flow 51, to respond to the ongoing forest fire. Winds are expected to intensify this afternoon, with increased fire behaviour anticipated.
As of now, all evacuation directives and road closures are still in place as we mark day 10 since the wildfire broke out.
